Traveling well: how to spend money where it matters
Tourism is one of the largest money flows on earth, and where that money lands makes an enormous difference to the places we love to visit. A few small choices keep far more of your spend in the community you came to see.
Stay small, eat local
A family-run guesthouse keeps almost every dollar in the neighbourhood; an international chain sends most of it abroad. The food is better too – we have yet to find a hotel buffet that beats the place the taxi driver recommends.
Hire the local guide
It is why every Voyage guide lives where they work. You get the stories you would never find in a book, and a fair wage goes to someone who calls the place home. Everyone wins, which is rather the point.
